Latvia and Georgia are two countries that have cooperated well over the last years. During his visit to Georgia, Latvian President Andris Berzins acknowledged the fact that the main purpose of his visit is strengthening the relations between the two countries. Latvia is engaged in trade activities with Georgia, but the cooperation between the two countries could be even greater. In 2013 Georgia was ranked as Latvia’s 53rd most important trade partner and Latvian exports to Georgia increased compared to last year.
Discussions about the transportation and transit sectors
During their meeting, the two officials talked about what business sectors could be further developed and how the two countries could benefit from mutual investments. The development of the transportation sector and the transit sector is one of the most important strategic areas for cooperation between the two countries.
A link between the two would create important geo-political advantages, by linking the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea regions. This development could have a tremendous influence not only for the two countries, but also for the dynamic of trade within Europe. The two countries could work together to transport natural gas from the Caspian sea and from other sources directly to Europe.
Mutual support
The Latvian President wanted to emphasize the fact that his country supports Georgia’s aspirations to adhere to the Euro-Atlantic region. Latvia was one of the first countries to ratify the EU-Georgia Association Agreement, a move that was highly appreciated by Georgian officials.
The Latvian president also appreciates the NATO-Georgia partnership and acknowledged the fact that Georgia has proven to be a strong ally in the international missions that have taken place in recent years.
Georgia is a country located at the crossroads between Western Asia and Eastern Europe, which has the Black Sea to the west. The country has been constantly involved in trade activities and tourism represents a significant part of the country’s economy.
