Register-a-Trademark-in-LatviaLatvia has strong regulations regarding the protection of intellectual property. Latvia’s laws on intellectual property are based on international regulations offering protection to copyrights, trademarks, industrial designs and patents. Many companies in Latvia are interested in the protection of trademark for which registration is required.

What are the requirements for trademark registration in Latvia?

In Latvia, trademarks are registered with the Patent Office. Enterprisers are not required to handle the trademark registration procedure themselves as they can give a power of attorney to a Latvian lawyer that will cover all required steps and complete the process.

Certain documents must be provided for the registration of a trademark in Latvia. Together with the power of attorney, a design of the trademark is required only if it is a graphic sign, a statement with the description of the products or services the trademark will represent, details such as name and address of the trademark owner and billing information.

The registration procedure for a trademark in Latvia

After the filing procedure, that can take up to three months, depending on all the documents that must be submitted, an official notification will be issued within four or five months. The notification will state the application was received.

Further on, another period of three months will be used for the examination of the trademark and the decision of issuing or not the trademark certificate. If the decision is positive, the applicant will be required to pay the registration and publication fees. Once these are paid, the trademark will be registered in the State Register of Trademarks in Latvia and will be published in the Official Gazette.

During three months, oppositions against the trademark registration may be submitted with the Patent Office. The whole trademark registration procedure may take around a year which is why applicants are advised to request the aid of a law firm in Latvia. A trademark has a five year validity and, after renewal, the validity period will be 10 years.
